Creating a Christmas Wonderland in Brisbane
How the future Olympic city can create an iconic Australian Christmas experience.
When most people picture Christmas, they imagine snowy landscapes, twinkling lights, and cosy fireplaces.
But in Brisbane, Queensland, Christmas comes with sun-soaked days, balmy evenings, and a vibrant outdoor lifestyle.
What better way to celebrate the season than by embracing these unique qualities to create a truly Australian Christmas wonderland?
Brisbane was my home for 15 years and it’s not exactly known for its lively tourism experiences. Recently we spent the night in the heart of Brisbane city before taking a flight to the USA. It got me thinking how Brisbane could create a truly Australian Christmas experience.
However it does boast a wealth of iconic locations and opportunities that, with a festive twist, could transform the city into a must-visit destination during the Christmas season.
Here’s how I reimagine Brisbane as a Christmas wonderland that delights tens of thousands of leisure travellers.
1. South Bank: A Summer Christmas Spectacle
South Bank’s riverside parklands are perfect for a festive transformation. Imagine the bougainvillea-draped arbors illuminated with Christmas lights, creating magical pathways for evening strolls.
The Streets Beach lagoon could host “Christmas by the Beach,” with sand sculptures of Australian-themed holiday scenes, including kangaroos pulling Santa’s sleigh.
Create scenes of Christmas light through the South Bank Parklands to encourage visitors to roam and find each of them, like a treasure hunt.
Night markets at South Bank’s Cultural Forecourt could offer locally crafted gifts, Queensland-grown produce, and gourmet holiday treats like mango pavlova and lamington-inspired desserts. Even our own version of an ice drink that can be decorated to replace the hot chocolates of colder climates.
Add live music from local artists performing Christmas carols with a Queensland twist, and the atmosphere is set for unforgettable evenings.
2. Brisbane River: A Christmas Lights Extravaganza.
The Brisbane River offers a natural stage for a stunning light show.
A flotilla of illuminated boats could parade up and down the river each night, with each vessel decorated in festive designs.
Iconic bridges like the Karilpa, Story Bridge and Neville Bonner Bridge could shine with synchronised Christmas light displays visible from vantage points across the city.
Visitors could join special Christmas river cruises featuring Queensland-inspired menus fresh seafood, tropical fruits, and sparkling wine.
Onboard entertainment, such as live storytelling of an Australian Santa or Indigenous Dreamtime tales, would create a uniquely local holiday experience.
The city also encourages corporate towers to light up in red, green and white for the festive season as well as decorating their foyers and adding window displays.
3. Queen Street Mall: The Heart of Festive Shopping
Brisbane’s Queen Street Mall could become a Christmas shopper’s paradise.
Each year, the mall could host an open-air “Twilight Christmas Festival,” complete with pop-up stalls offering handmade gifts, local art, and indigenous crafts. The theme could be more modern and edgy with a focus on upcycling, sustainability and use of recycled locally produced items.
To elevate the experience, large Christmas installations such as a Queenslander-style gingerbread house or a giant tree made entirely of recycled materials could serve as photo opportunities for visitors.
Encourage interactive art installations to entice the community to be involved like decorating ornaments or adding wishes to a public Christmas mural.
This style of installation would complement the already popular Town Hall and King George Square more traditional Christmas displays
4. Roma Street Parkland: A Garden Wonderland
Roma Street Parkland could bloom into a garden Christmas wonderland. The precinct’s pathways could be lined with thousands of solar-powered fairy lights and light-up displays shaped like native animals, from koalas to kookaburras.
The Amphitheatre could host nightly outdoor movies showing festive favorites, accompanied by food trucks offering Queensland-inspired snacks. A special kids’ corner could feature Christmas craft workshops, like making ornaments with locally sourced materials or designing cards with images of Brisbane landmarks.
5. Festive Food and Drink Trails Across Brisbane
Brisbane’s food scene is thriving, and Christmas presents a perfect opportunity to spotlight its flavors.
Create a “Festive Food Trail” connecting local cafes, bars, and restaurants offering special Queensland Christmas menus. From seafood platters to tropical-inspired cocktails, this initiative could turn the city into a culinary playground.
Local craft breweries could host Christmas-themed beer-tasting events, while farmers’ markets like the Brisbane Powerhouse Markets could introduce holiday editions featuring native Australian produce.
6. Brisbane City Hall and King George Square
Brisbane’s City Hall is already a focal point of the city’s Christmas celebrations, but there’s room for even more magic.
The annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony could be expanded into a full evening festival, featuring cultural performances, choirs, and food stalls.
King George Square could host a daily “Snow and Sun Show,” combining artificial snow play areas for kids with sunny beach setups, blending traditional and Queensland-style Christmas imagery.
